Content SEO Checklist for 2026 — Every Step Before You Publish

Publishing blog content without an SEO checklist is a common and correctable mistake. It doesn't take long, but skipping it means leaving straightforward improvements on the table. Here's the checklist to run through before any blog post goes live in 2026.

Before you write

• Identify the primary keyword and check its search volume and intent
• Search the keyword in Google to understand what type of content ranks (listicle, how-to, comparison)
• Note the top three ranking pages and what topics they cover
• Choose a URL slug that includes the primary keyword and is under 75 characters

Title and meta

• Title tag includes the primary keyword, ideally near the start
• Title is between 50 and 60 characters (check with Meta Preview tool)
• Meta description is 140 to 155 characters
• Meta description naturally includes the keyword and has a clear value proposition
• Both title and description look clean in SERP preview (not cut off mid-sentence)

On-page content

• H1 heading exists and includes the primary keyword
• Primary keyword appears in the first 100 words of the article
• Subheadings (H2, H3) used throughout to break up content
• Primary keyword and related terms appear naturally throughout (not stuffed)
• All images have descriptive alt text with keywords where relevant
• Images are compressed and using a modern format (WebP preferred)
• At least two internal links to other relevant pages on your site
• One or two outbound links to authoritative sources where appropriate

Technical checks

• Canonical tag is set to the page's own URL
• Open Graph tags are set (og:title, og:description, og:image)
• Page is not accidentally blocked in robots.txt
• No noindex tag unless intentionally added
• Page loads in under three seconds on mobile

After publishing

• Submit the URL for indexing in Google Search Console
• Add the page to your XML sitemap (or verify it auto-updates)
• Set a calendar reminder to review performance in 90 days
