Sometimes you need a PDF page as an image โ for a presentation slide, a social media post, a thumbnail, or to embed a document preview in a web page. Converting PDF to image is straightforward when you have the right tool.
When to Convert PDF to Image
- Creating a preview thumbnail of a document for a website
- Sharing a PDF page on social media (which doesn't display PDFs natively)
- Embedding a page of a report in a presentation or email
- Converting a scanned form to an image for use in another tool
- Creating a consistent visual regardless of PDF viewer settings
PNG vs JPG for PDF Conversion
- PNG: Lossless, supports transparency. Best for documents with text, diagrams, or if you plan to edit the image further.
- JPG:Lossy, smaller file size. Best for scanned documents where pixel-perfect text isn't critical and file size matters.
Resolution Matters
For on-screen use, 72โ96 DPI is sufficient. For print use, choose 300 DPI. Higher DPI produces larger file sizes but sharper results when zoomed in. Most web use cases are fine with 150 DPI as a balance between quality and file size.
Converting Multiple Pages
When converting a multi-page PDF, each page becomes a separate image file. Most tools will ZIP them for download. If you only need a specific page, use a PDF splitter first to extract that page, then convert the single-page PDF to an image.
